Games where fans run the multiplayer now

2026-10-07 · 64-player Halo 3, 128-player Halo, co-op Mario 64 and more

Official servers don't last. Publishers switch them off when a game stops selling, and plenty of classics never had online play in the first place. Fan projects fill both gaps. Some revive a game's original multiplayer, some add online play to games that only ever had split screen, and a few go well past what the original could handle.

Shooters

  • Project Reclaimer runs Halo 3 from your own Master Chief Collection with community dedicated servers, a server browser, lobby voting and games of up to 64 players, four times Halo 3's limit. Early builds.
  • OpenCE brings the original Xbox Halo's system link to Windows, Linux and Android: up to 128 players in one game, mixed across all three platforms, joined over the internet with an invite link. No server run by the project is needed.

We cover both in more detail in our Halo roundup.

Platformers and party games

  • sm64coopdx (Super Mario 64 Co-op Deluxe) puts several Marios in the same castle, online, with mod support. Built on the SM64 decompilation, so it needs your own ROM.
  • Lighthouse, HarbourMasters' Banjo-Kazooie port, adds online multiplayer and a built-in randomizer.
  • Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a standalone 3D Sonic fan game with online play, and SRB2Kart turns it into a kart racer with community tracks.
  • Super Smash Flash 2 is a free fan-made platform fighter with online matches.

Strategy and simulation

  • OpenRA remakes the engines of Command & Conquer, Red Alert and Dune 2000 with modern online multiplayer.
  • OpenTTD, based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe, has public multiplayer servers and its own free graphics, so no original game is needed.
  • OpenRCT2 adds multiplayer to RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: build one park together.
  • VCMI for Heroes of Might and Magic III, Return to the Roots for The Settlers II, and Dune Legacy for Dune II all offer online multiplayer with the original games' data.

Racing and driving

  • The Driver Syndicate is a free car-chase game in the style of the original Driver games, with online play and a level editor.
  • CTR: High Octane keeps multiplayer local, with four-player split screen, but adds online leaderboards for time trials.

And an MMO

PokeMMO runs the GBA and DS Pokémon games as one shared online world, with trading and player battles across five regions. It needs your own ROMs.

Before you play

Projects that remake an engine or run on a decompilation need the original game's data from your copy; standalone fan games don't. Each game's page says which it is. Fan-run servers depend on volunteers, so a project's Discord or forum is usually the best place to find a match.
