Modern Warfare 2 in VR: the Overlord mod, and the flat-game VR wave

2026-10-20 · Physical reloads, hand climbing and the whole campaign in a headset

Call of Duty never had a VR campaign. A fan mod now adds one. Overlord, first published on GitHub on 5 October 2026, turns Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered into a VR game with tracked hands, physical weapons and VR versions of the campaign's set pieces. VR YouTuber BeardoBenjo's 22-minute playthrough puts it in the same league as the best VR mods of the year.

What the mod does

  • Stereo 3D with head and hand tracking. You look around the levels in your headset and see your hands, with holsters on your body for a pistol, grenades and a knife.
  • Two-handed weapons with real reloads. Each gun keeps its own procedure: drop the magazine, insert a new one, pull the slide or charging handle. Some reloads take four separate steps.
  • Grenades and melee by hand. You pull the pin and throw.
  • The set pieces in VR. Climbing the ice wall uses your arms, the snowmobile escape can be steered by hand or with a stick, and cutscenes play in 3D around you.
  • Comfort options. Turning style, controller alignment, aim assistance, recoil and quick reloads are all adjustable.

That includes the campaign's most controversial mission, No Russian, which loses the distance a screen gives it.

What you need

A Windows 10 or 11 PC, a headset that works with SteamVR, and your own copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered. That version is sold only on Battle.net. Overlord is a beta maintained by one person: its README warns of crashes and missing visuals on some machines, says updates can break saves, and asks players to treat the current release as a test. If you want something that installs and runs without trouble, wait for the stable release.

Part of a wave

Overlord arrives in a year full of VR mods for games that were never meant for headsets. Titanfall 2 has one, installed through CircuitLord's VR mod installer. Doom Eternal has KHARVOX ARGENT, BioShock Remastered has a native VR mod, and the older Call of Duty 4 has its own VR port. In the video, BeardoBenjo notes that some of these modders now share what they learn, which is part of why each new release arrives in better shape than the last.

The same thing is happening one level down, in ports. The Gran Turismo 2 native port runs in PCVR and standalone on Quest 3, with cockpit driving.

FanGamesDB now tags VR projects: use the PC VR or Quest · Pico VR filters on the homepage, or see every one on the VR page. Each game page has a VR section with the headsets it supports, tracking, controls and runtime, and links to the project's own page. As with every port and mod here, you need your own copy of the game.
