OldUnreal: the volunteers who keep Unreal running
Epic released Unreal in May 1998 and Unreal Tournament the following year. Both ran on Windows 98-era hardware, both shipped with an editor, and both grew mod and map scenes that outlived Epic's own support by decades. A group of volunteers at OldUnreal is the reason you can still install them on a current PC, a Mac or a Linux machine, and the reason they're now free.
From fan site to maintainer
OldUnreal describes itself as "purely devoted to the old Unreal (Tournament) versions". Its long-time head, who posts as Smirftsch, built the 227 patch for Unreal "with knowledge and permission of Epic Games", in the patch page's words. 227 fixes bugs and security holes, adds Direct3D 9, OpenGL and OpenAL drivers, and brings a native Linux version, while keeping old mods, maps and servers compatible. 227i is the stable release on OldUnreal's download page; 227j and the 227k test builds have followed.
In 2019 OldUnreal reached an agreement with Epic to take over maintenance of Unreal Tournament's code. Its 469 patch has since fixed hundreds of stability, security and performance problems and added builds for modern macOS and 64-bit and ARM Linux. In December 2025 Epic approved the same arrangement for Unreal Tournament 2004.
The patches carry a careful disclaimer: Epic approved the project, but it isn't an official Epic release, and Epic doesn't test it. The work is unpaid. On its 469 page the team asks for donations and hardware, and once noted that its five developers shared a single 2012 MacBook Pro for macOS testing.
From delisted to free
Epic removed the old Unreal games from sale in late 2022. For a while the only way to get them was a second-hand disc. Then, in November 2024, Epic confirmed to the press that Unreal and Unreal Tournament were on the Internet Archive and that people were "free to independently link to and play these versions". OldUnreal released installers the same month: they download the original disc image, install it and apply the latest patch in one go. UT2004 got the same treatment after the December 2025 agreement, and a new set of installers for all three games arrived in February 2026. The installers now pull the disc images from OldUnreal's own servers and fall back to the Internet Archive.
Why it matters
Campaigners like Stop Killing Games ask publishers for an end-of-life plan when they stop supporting a game. Unreal shows what one can look like. Epic didn't keep the games on sale, but it let a community team keep the code alive and hand the games out free. Players got a maintained, legal version, and Epic spent nothing on upkeep.

- Where the community keeps its maps, mods and history
