Recomp ports that run on a cheap handheld

What actually works on sub-200 retro handhelds, ARM Linux devices and Android portables.

Recompiled ports produce desktop applications first, but the scene reaches cheap hardware through three routes. Ranked by how well they work today:

1. Hand-written native recreations (best fit)

Gen1Recomp (Pokmon Red/Blue/Yellow, now extended into Gen 2) is the standout: a native Lua/LOVE2D recreation that ships official builds for dedicated retro handhelds and asks only for your own cartridge dump. This is the only project in the database with an official dedicated-handheld build.

2. Linux ARM handhelds via PortMaster

N64 ports are x86-first, but some builds get ported to ARM Linux through PortMaster and community packaging. Support is patchy and per-game check the project's releases page for ARM builds before buying hardware for it.

3. Browser-based builds (the wildcard)

The PS1 recomp scene has produced WebAssembly-first builds that run in a browser tab at 60 FPS which means any Android handheld with a modern browser can run them, including devices no native port supports. Watch the PSXRecomp community for new ones.

What to avoid expecting

Xbox 360 recomps (Sonic Unleashed, the Mistwalker JRPGs) target desktop-class x86 only no cheap handheld runs them. For a 150-class device today: Gen1Recomp, browser builds, and emulation-adjacent native ports via PortMaster are the honest options.
